maintaining shower curtains
The type of material to choose is a major decision when buying a shower curtain. Shower curtains come in different
types of vinyl, cloth and plastic. There are up and down sides to each type. When deciding which to type to buy,
one needs to consider the curtain's relative advantages and disadvantages as well as personal tastes.
One of the major advantages in buying vinyl and plastic shower curtains is their cost. They are very
inexpensive. In fact, some of them are designed to be disposable.
They also come in an almost endless array of styles, colors and designs. Vinyl (a durable, waterproof plastic)
shower curtain can be found in just about every color. They also have a great number of themes with water themes
being especially popular.
Being naturally waterproof and flexible, vinyl does a great job of keeping water inside the washing enclosure.
Furthermore, they are easy to clean maintain (see Shower Curtain Care).
Plastic is more susceptible to staining and dirt.
For all their advantages, some people do not feel vinyl shower curtains are elegant enough. For people who feel
this way, the more expensive cloth shower curtain is probably the better choice.
Many people prefer the look of a cotton or linen shower curtain. Since these will mildew if they are damp too
often, it is a good idea to use them with a liner so that they can have the more elegant look outside with
functionality of a very waterproof liner on the inside.
Another fabric option for a shower curtain is hemp. It is a heavy fabric made from plant fiber. Being naturally
resistant to bacteria and fungus, they not so susceptible to mildew or soap stains and do not require a liner. Hemp
is most often grown organically and colored with natural dyes. This makes it a natural choice for the
environmentally conscience consumer.
Fabric shower curtains made with materials like cotton, terry cloth or nylon are often more like window curtains
in the way they hang and can add a lot to the feel of the bathroom. They are sometimes designed to go with towels
and bath mats. When choosing this type of curtain, make sure they have been treated to resist stains and have
waterproof coatings.
Lace, suede, leather and silk are some other material choices available when purchasing a shower curtain.
In general, one should expect to perform more cleaning and maintenance (see Shower Curtain Care) when selecting a fabric shower
curtain.
